Puppies

BEFORE BUYING YOUR PUPPY

After a long hard search through many different breeds, you have finally decided that a Leonberger is for you. Well, that’s a start but your search is far from over.  You now need to do all you can to make sure you find the right Leo puppy for you. Do you want to show your Leo? Work your Leo? Both? Breed from your Leo? All three?

Seals can’t choose your Leonberger puppy for you – we’re sure you wouldn’t want us to. However, we can go a long way towards helping you through the minefield that seems to precede buying a puppy.

You are constantly told to ask breeders about things that may be new to you – things like hip scores, eye tests, hereditary diseases, diet etc.  How can you find the information you need– and ,more importantly, understand it?  It is certainly worth giving up your time to find out. Although nothing can be guaranteed, it can certainly reduce your chances of going wrong.

Seals has much information available on what you need to know. We can supply information packs to help you understand Leos better.

As well as health, there are other things to consider such as the Leo itself.  It’s the only breed I know where the dog and bitch are so different to look at as adults.  The characters and temperaments are also very varied through the different sexes and different lines. For this reason you are advised to meet as many different Leos as you can before deciding. We can help you meet Leos in different environments – at shows, working, in the home. We can put you in touch with Leo owners willing to let you meet their dogs in their home environment.  They can look a lot bigger in a house than the impression you get from looking at pictures or seeing them out in the open!

Seals run a breeders list where Leo owners with puppies for sale can advertise them.  Although being on the list is not a recommendation from the Seals, breeders have to satisfy certain criteria to be included. The sire and dam must both be hip scored and have current eye test certificates.

Please don’t go and see puppies until you have done your homework – because they are so beautiful you are going to want to take one home with you and all the advice about being sensible will go out of the window.  Nothing is foolproof, but why not reduce the odds?
