UKLA Companion Dog Assessment
(Basic) These companion dog assessments have been adopted by the UKLA. The Assessments were designed to show that the dogs have received enough basic training to
integrate into society in a pleasant and acceptable fashion. All pet dogs should be able to pass this assessment, but with a dog as big as a Leo it is essential that this Basic Level is achieved. The
exercises for the Basic and Intermediate level are detailed below. Start:
The assessor will approach owner and dog and ask for the dog to be placed in a sitting position (on lead) while the owner fills in the assessment entry form.
- The assessor will approach in a friendly manner and pat the dog.
- The dog will be under control on a loose lead while the owner opens a gate/barrier. Both will walk through, close the gate and the dog will be asked to sit
- The dog will walk on lead in a controlled manner around the ring. The walk will include left, right and about turns. The walk will then go outside the ring to walk in the outside environment in close
proximity to people and dogs.
- Owner and dog will walk back into the ring where another handler and dog (of friendly disposition) will be waiting. At approx 2mts distance the handlers will stop and talk to each other for approx. 30
seconds. The other handler will then leave the ring.
- The assessor will make a loud noise with a rattly tin at 2 mts distance from the dog.
- The owner will check the ears, mouth, tail and underside of a front paw of the dog.
