The UKLA holds a list for people wanting dogs from welfare but this does not work on a first come, first served
basis. Much time is spent trying to match up potential dogs with potential owners. I try to match the dog's special needs to an owner that I feel will be able to cope best with this dog. The dog may
have all kinds of hang-ups depending on his upbringing, socialisation etc. Also the situation of the would-be owner and any family involved has to be taken into consideration and as far as possible matched with
the dog. All this has to be done, yet the dog has to be moved and settled in as quickly and efficiently as possible. Just keep all this in mind if you are looking for a Leo from welfare and feel you have
waited longer than somebody else - your match will come. Welfare also tries to prevent problems occurring in the first place. Anyone making contact to enquire about the breed will be directed to see Leonbergers
in the flesh in a home environment. It is surprising how many people are enquiring about buying a puppy when they have never seen a Leonberger, only a picture in a book. Enquirers are also told the pitfalls
as well as the pleasures that come from Leonberger ownership.
If, having purchased a puppy, new owners are having problems they can always contact UKLA for advice. Where possible we will try to sort the
problem out so that the dog can stay in his home. When this is not possible then every effort will be made to find the right home for that dog. UKLA President and well-known behaviourist, Angela White
is also available to give behavioural advice to UKLA members. (Please contact a UKLA committee member first if you wish to take advantage of this offer).
If you need advice on your Leonberger or you can offer a good
home to a rescued Leo, please contact me on the contacts at the top of the page.
If you can help welfare in any of the ways listed below we will be glad to welcome you as part of the UKLA Welfare Team.
