RESULTS OF THE 1998 HEALTH SURVEY
A health survey was carried out by Lesley Gray via Leolink (now the UKLA ) and the Leonberger Club of GB in 1998. We had hoped to get enough data on the health status of Leonbergers in the UK to give a
good picture of the breed. The survey was carried out anonymously to try to get a good rate of return. Unfortunately the response was very poor – only 91
entries returned. Of these very few had been bred from and the average age of the sample was only 3 years of age. The results are still of interest to Leonberger owners but the sample is not large
enough to be of scientific interest and may even be misleading. For instance, it shows no incidence of Anal Furunculosis although we know that there have been quite a few dogs diagnosed with this problem in
the last couple of years. The chart that follows shows the overview of the results. E.g. how many owners consider their dogs to show aggressive tendencies (40 out of 91), how many
have eye problems (17 out of 91). We will be looking to repeat the survey in another year or two and hope to get a better response then. This proposed 2nd Survey has now been carried out
and the health forms dispatched in 2003. We are in the process of analysing this data now. The result of the overview can be seen by clicling on the link below.
