About UKLA

Navigating your way to being a Leonberger owner on your own can be a rocky path. So let the UK Leonberger Association help and guide you.

Who are the UKLA?

The United Kingdom Leonberger Association is an organisation of people spread across the UK.  Some have been involved with the breed since the first imports, others are involved with importing new lines, some are involved with working their dogs.  Some members breed but many others join to enjoy all the activities organised by the Association.  Above all everyone has in common a genuine interest and love of the breed.

What does UKLA do?

UKLA arranges events, fun days, training days throughout the year so that you can come along and have a go with your dog.  Included are water rescue work, draught work, agility (geared to suit their size), obedience, working assessments, tracking and nose work, long walks, Xmas parties and get-togethers.

There is no need to get serious - just come along and enjoy the fun.  Assessments are held in water work, draught work and working (a mix of obedience and agility) with certificates for those who pass.  All the assessments start at a very basic level so that pups as young as 4 months can begin training.  It is also strongly recommended that you come and see Leos in action before you take the plunge and purchase your puppy.  They may all seem very calm and placid when laying around bored at a dog show but can be very different when excited.

Spectators are always very welcome at all UKLA events.

Most owners find that they enjoy the social side that these activities bring, too.  What can be nicer than a day out with a bunch of friendly folk who all share the same interest?  Partaking in an interest together also helps cement that special bond between you and your dog.

Why join UKLA?

To enjoy the activities, have fun, meet lots of Leos and their owners, to find out more information on Leos, to receive help and advice should you need it - if we don't have the answer we usually know "someone who does"!

Members also receive our newsletter, Leo Link, three times a year.  This is a good source of information, news, doggy features, reports of past events, health articles and stories from other members.

UKLA can also provide T-shirts, sweatshirts, polo shirts, Xmas cards etc.

Most importantly, it is a point of contact should you need someone to speak to.

Do you  require a Leo to qualify to be a member of the UKLA? no you do not even need that, we have members without Leos who just want to join in the fun with whatever dog they have.
